FOREIGN POLITICAL BODY TRIED TO RESOLVE NPP INTERNAL CRISIS- AFOKO
Not even the International Democrat Union (IDU) could
solve NPP crisis – Afoko .
The suspended National Chairman of the New Patriotic
Party (NPP) Paul Afoko has revealed that foreign political
body, the International Democrat Union (IDU) tried
unsuccessfully to resolve the NPP internal crisis.
According to embattled Afoko, the IDU sent officials from
the Christian Democrat Union in Germany to Ghana to help
the party settle the wrangling.
“The Germans did their best but not much was achieved.
They even invited us to come over to Germany to study the
mechanisms that their party used to handle their internal
problems.”
Afoko further disclosed that the Overlord of Asanteman
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s effort at ensuring peace in the NPP
proved futile.
“Later, the King of Asante, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, got
involved. He invited me to his palace in Manhyia, Kumasi. I
went and told him my side of the story. After listening to
me, the Asantehene told me: I have heard you. I have also
met Akufo Addo and heard his side of the story. Akufo told
me he was traveling to America. I am also traveling to
London to deliver a speech at Chatham House. We would be
back in th country around the same time. When I get back I
will invite you, Kwaabena Agyepong, Akufo Addo and
President Kufour to Manhyia and together we would resolve
all the oertinent issues that are affecting the party. Until
then, my son, I don’t want to you to say or do anything that
would further worsen the situation. I have told Akufo Addo
the same thing. I thanked his Majesty and promised to heed
to his advice. I returned to Accra and kept my cool. A few
days later, the intolerant militant wing convened an illegal
meeting and announced that they had suspended me
indefinitely from the party. Can you imagine that” Afoko
fumed in an interview with the Africa Watch Magazine.
He expressed his gratitude to ex President Kufour for doing
so much in trying to restore peace in the NPP, adding that
22 meetings were held in this regard but yielded no positive
results.
“At one meeting of the Council of Elders, a disturbed Kufour
passionately talked about the crisis in the party and one
could see pain in the man’s eyes about the mess in the
party. It was emotional for me and I kept asking myself why
all the violence, why all the distrust, why all these fears?
When Kofour left the meeting, the Council of Elders decided
to put a sub-committee together to help the NEC resolve
our problems, advice and facilitate the settlement.”
Afoko added: “They picked four elders- Madam Ama Busia,
Felix Owusu Agyepong, Kwadwo Mpiani and Ambassador
Adjei Bawuah. But Hackman Owusu Agyemang literally
forced himself onto that committee and became a fifth
member. I can tell you that we had 22 meetings with the
sub-committee of the Council of Elders. Out of those 22
meetings, the Elders themselves called one meeting. The
other meetings were all at my instigation. This shows you
how serious I was about the situation.”
